Shifting EV Adoption into Overdrive: Technology and policy innovations for short and long-term success

In the U.S., transportation is now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. While efforts are underway to curb emissions from all types of transportation, tackling emissions from passenger vehicles is crucial, as they make up nearly 60 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions within the transportation sector.

Just selling more EVs is not enough. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed in August 2022 includes multiple provisions to make electric vehicles more financially attractive to consumers, as well as incentives for charging deployment and domestic manufacturing. Now is the time for coordination between all stakeholders, including utilities, carmakers, and technology providers, to capitalize on the momentum of the IRA. The infrastructure to support this transition must provide a positive experience for consumers as they shift away from internal combustion engines and move toward a new way of driving.
